Petrópolis
Distant
66 kilometers from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis
is located on Serra da Estrela, in Rio de Janeiro State.
It offers a mild climate, with temperatures ranging from
14 to 23 Celsius degrees. It’s generally a lot colder
at night, even in the Summer, so it’s a good idea to have
a jacket around. In Winter it is advisable to use heavier
clothing, even when it is not so cold in Rio de Janeiro.
Specially in Spring and Summer, the town is often covered
by a humid and heavy fog, to which its citizens refer
as the “ruço”. Appearing normally at late noon, the “ruço”
usually comes quickly from nothing and sometimes may be
really heavy. It is not advisable to travel when such
fog occurs, as it becomes impossible even to see the ink
markings on the road.

Teresópolis
- City of Theresa - in honor of Theresa Christina, Emperor
Peter II's wife, who, in the late 19th Century, fell in
love with the natural beauty and climate of this mountain
region, where she would, during the often visits and vacation
periods, rest with the family.
The
roots of Teresópolis date to the first half of the 19th
Century. The first official description of the city was
made in 1788. The region though, became known only as
of 1821, when the English descendent Portuguese George
March acquired broad acres and made a model farm with
its farm house located where nowadays is the Bairro do
Alto. The farm ended up to form the first important settlement
on the way from the Court to the Province of Gerais, developing
considerably its agriculture, cattle raising and summer
vacationing in the region. Despite of its largely thought,
all the enlargement and subsequent development of this
small settlement happened southwards, thus the merchants
came from the Minas Gerais towards the port of Estrela,
in the back of the Guanabara Bay, passing through Petrópolis.
This region was considered by them as a strategic rest
point. Only later, much later, the flow changed northwards,
as the road connecting Rio to Teresópolis was opened. As
the settlement slowly developed, it raised to the category
of Parish of Santo Antônio do Paquequer in 1855. Only
on July 6th, 1891, the parish was raised to the status
of city, becoming known as Teresópolis, being its territory
released from the city of Magé.
From
that time to these days, Teresópolis has kept on attracting
thousands of visitors and even newcoming residents that,
as well as the Empress Theresa Christina, became enchanted
with privileged climate, exuberant beauty of its paradise
landscape, as well as the marvelous natural attractions.
