Soccer
is the most popular sport in Rio de Janeiro. You will
be able to understand the cariocas' passion for soccer
when you see people playing soccer in the fields, on the
beaches and in the streets of Rio. Anyplace is a place
for a soccer match. In fact, on of the first gifts a recent
born Brazilian's baby boy receives is a soccer ball.
The
most popular teams in Rio are Flamengo, Botafogo, Fluminense
and Vasco. The major rivalry is between Flamengo and Botafogo,
and Flamengo and Fluminense. It is worth to see one of
these matches. It looks like the world is coming to an
end. The big flags, the fireworks and the huge crowd (approximately
130,000) in the largest soccer stadium in the world (Maracanã)
all singing their corresponding songs, is an unforgettable
spectacle. Do not go by yourself though. Try to go with
a group of people or best of all with a local person or
a tour group.
