Hiking
Once
in Rio, you will realize why hiking is part of the Cariocas
life. People like to walk to move around. There are also
some outstanding natural hiking paths around Rio.One of
the best hikings is through the Tijuca National Park -
the one of the largest natural resources in the city.
You need to know where you are going though. It is so
huge that once in a while people get lost there.
Located
in the middle of Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca National Park
borders 11 city districts. It has about 3,200 hectares.
The Atlantic Forest vegetation and the wet tropical weather
create a natural habitat for birds, monkeys, eagles and
many reptiles. There are some organized groups that conduct
hiking tours. You can also go hike in the Pedra
da Gavea. Once you reach the top of Pedra da Gavea,
you will experience a breathtaking scene. For more information
about hiking check out the RioHiking Web site.
Surf
Surfing
is probably the fourth most popular sport in Rio, behind
soccer, volleyball and auto racing. The surfer's favorite
beaches are Prainha, Grumari and Recreio dos Bandeirantes,
not to mention the beach called Barraca do Pepe. Pepe
was not only a surfer champion but also a hang gliding
champion of the world. He died during a hang gliding world
championship in Japan. You will probable see the most
beautiful Brazilian girls at this beach.
You
can also drive to Saquarema (It is about 60 miles or 90
Km from Rio). Saquarema is well know for its 9 feet (3
meter) waves.
Scuba
Diving
A
very good spot for diving is Angras
dos Reis. Angra dos Reis is located in the middle
of Serra
do Mar, 100 miles or (150 Km) from Rio de Janeiro
city. It contains 2,000 beaches spread over 365 island.
The water is calm and crystal clear. There are a lot of
shipwrecks and inabitate inland. There is a scuba dive
school in which you can rent equipment or have scuba dive
lessons. You will find many scuba diving stores also in
the Arpoador (Ipanema).
Sailing
Sailing
through the coast of Rio is an unforgetable experience.
The wind is usually pretty good. Another good place to
sail is Angra dos Reis. In fact, sailing is an everyday
activity in Angra. The city has the biggest South American
fleet with about 6,700 boats. There are some organized
sightseeing that can sail you through this paradise. You
will be able to get more information at your hotel. It
is very beautiful.
Jogging
The
beaches sidewals of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are
the most popular places for jogging. The whole Copacabana
sidewalk is about 4 miles (6KM) long. In addition, the
jogging view is great. But remmember, do not wear jewelry
or anything that will indicate that you are a tourist,
when you go for a walk or a run. Wear a very casual short,
do not take money or documents with you either. The last
thing you want do is spoil your walk.
Cycling
Cycling
is very popular among Cariocas. There are bike paths almost
everywhere (beaches, lakes, etc.). The beaches from Flamengo
to Leblon are closed to traffic on Sundays to allow people
to freely ride bicycles.
Climbing
If
you like to climb, Rio can provide an unforgettable experience.
With two big mountains Pão de Açúcar
(Sugar Loaf) and Corcovado, should impress any experienced
climber with a fascinating view. Sugar Loaf has approximately
1,200 foot (400 meters) and many route paths. The good
thing about climbing the Sugar Loaf is that it does not
require a lot of equipment or a lot of experience. Corcovado,
however, with approximately 705 meters requires equipment
as well as experience. The view from Corcovado is incredible.
Check with your hotel clubs that offer guidance and instructions
to climb.
Hang-Gliding
A
very popular sport in Rio. In fact, thanks to Cariocas,
Brazil has own four world champion titles. If you want
to try this sport, you can arrange a double flight (an
experient pilot will fly along with you). Most people
take off from the Pedra Bonita in São Conrado.
