Hiking

Once in Rio, you will realize why hiking is part of the Cariocas life. People like to walk to move around. There are also some outstanding natural hiking paths around Rio.One of the best hikings is through the Tijuca National Park - the one of the largest natural resources in the city. You need to know where you are going though. It is so huge that once in a while people get lost there.

Floresta da Tijuca

Located in the middle of Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca National Park borders 11 city districts. It has about 3,200 hectares. The Atlantic Forest vegetation and the wet tropical weather create a natural habitat for birds, monkeys, eagles and many reptiles. There are some organized groups that conduct hiking tours. Surf

Surfing is probably the fourth most popular sport in Rio, behind soccer, volleyball and auto racing. The surfer's favorite beaches are Prainha, Grumari and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, not to mention the beach called Barraca do Pepe. Pepe was not only a surfer champion but also a hang gliding champion of the world. He died during a hang gliding world championship in Japan. You will probable see the most beautiful Brazilian girls at this beach.

You can also drive to Saquarema (It is about 60 miles or 90 Km from Rio). Saquarema is well know for its 9 feet (3 meter) waves.

Scuba Diving

A very good spot for diving is Angras dos Reis. Angra dos Reis is located in the middle of Serra do Mar, 100 miles or (150 Km) from Rio de Janeiro city. It contains 2,000 beaches spread over 365 island. The water is calm and crystal clear. There are a lot of shipwrecks and inabitate inland. There is a scuba dive school in which you can rent equipment or have scuba dive lessons. You will find many scuba diving stores also in the Arpoador (Ipanema).

Sailing

Sailing through the coast of Rio is an unforgetable experience. The wind is usually pretty good. Another good place to sail is Angra dos Reis. In fact, sailing is an everyday activity in Angra. The city has the biggest South American fleet with about 6,700 boats. There are some organized sightseeing that can sail you through this paradise. Jogging

The beaches sidewals of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are the most popular places for jogging. The whole Copacabana sidewalk is about 4 miles (6KM) long. In addition, the jogging view is great. But remmember, do not wear jewelry or anything that will indicate that you are a tourist, when you go for a walk or a run. Wear a very casual short, do not take money or documents with you either. The last thing you want do is spoil your walk.

Cycling

Cycling is very popular among Cariocas. There are bike paths almost everywhere (beaches, lakes, etc.). The beaches from Flamengo to Leblon are closed to traffic on Sundays to allow people to freely ride bicycles.

Climbing

If you like to climb, Rio can provide an unforgettable experience. With two big mountains Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) and Corcovado, should impress any experienced climber with a fascinating view. Sugar Loaf has approximately 1,200 foot (400 meters) and many route paths. The good thing about climbing the Sugar Loaf is that it does not require a lot of equipment or a lot of experience. Corcovado, however, with approximately 705 meters requires equipment as well as experience. The view from Corcovado is incredible. Check with your hotel clubs that offer guidance and instructions to climb.

Hang-Gliding

A very popular sport in Rio. In fact, thanks to Cariocas, Brazil has own four world champion titles. If you want to try this sport, you can arrange a double flight (an experient pilot will fly along with you). Most people take off from the Pedra Bonita in São Conrado.
